Day 4 of Installation, June 1 2012

I am standing in the elevator of Greenway Building’s lobby after midnight in Emeryville California. It is early morning of June 2 and the light and line sculpture Cascada is almost finished (She needs a little more polishing and caulking on the top cap and seams). This is the fourth day of the installation inside the new science building and the programming is done. 10 minutes of color sequences and algorithms followed by 2 minutes of all white light are set to run 5 times an hour, 7 days a week from 7AM-10Pm. The steel skin wrapped around the molded semi-translucent acrylic cylinder is laser carved steel plate of two fern fronds,  carved from my black line sketch. The light runs top down and bottom up- there is a sense of the infinite as the light pulses and flows through my newest light sculpture, Cascada. The title is the Italian word for waterfall; and the theme of the rain forest -is based in hope and possibility for solutions to our energy demands through research and exploration of our rain forests by the scientists who will occupy this beautiful new space. Let the light shine.

3-d line and light sculpture

A little blast from this past spring. The work is based on Monet’s water lilies and is “painted” with programmable led lights. There are 100 nodes or light bulbs in this art work.  that can be be addressed with color, brightness, contrast. When the nodes are addressed- I can then run algorithms, the algorithm that mimmicks throwing a rock in the middle of a pond, a ripple effect is what is the sequence of lights here in this video.
Music is by French artist Johnny Halladay.
Enjoy
